Most people think of a smart TV as a television that happens to run apps. The more accurate way to think about it, from a security and privacy standpoint, is as a data collection device that happens to also play video. That is not an exaggeration, it is close to the actual business model behind a lot of "affordable" smart TVs on the market today, where the hardware is sold near cost and the ongoing revenue comes from data and advertising.
What smart TVs actually collect, and how
Depending on the manufacturer and model, a smart TV can collect what you watch, including content from external devices like a game console or streaming box plugged into it, how long you watch, what apps you open and how often, and in some cases, audio picked up by a built-in or remote-attached microphone. Regulatory action in the United States has directly addressed this, most notably the Federal Trade Commission's settlement with a major smart TV manufacturer over collecting viewing data without adequate consent, documented on the FTC's press release page, which is worth searching if you want the specifics of that case.
Automatic Content Recognition, explained plainly
The main technology behind this is called Automatic Content Recognition, often shortened to ACR. It works by taking periodic snapshots of whatever is displayed on screen, from any source, not just the TV's own apps, and matching those snapshots against a database to identify exactly what you are watching, down to the specific episode and timestamp in many cases. This is how a TV can build a viewing profile even from a cable box, a Blu-ray player, or a game console connected through HDMI, sources the TV manufacturer has no direct business relationship with at all.
ACR is usually enabled by default and is often buried under a setting with an innocuous name like "Viewing Information Services" or "Live Plus," worded in a way that does not obviously signal what it actually does.
Voice assistants built into the remote or TV
Many smart TVs and their remotes now include a microphone for voice search and voice assistant integration. Depending on the implementation, this microphone can be always listening for a wake word, similar to a smart speaker, or only active while a button is held down. The always-listening implementations carry the same general privacy considerations as any smart speaker, worth understanding on its own terms rather than assuming a TV's microphone is somehow lower stakes just because it is attached to a television.
Why the TV itself is also a network security concern
Beyond data collection, smart TVs are also, functionally, under-secured computers sitting on your home network. Manufacturers frequently ship years of software with infrequent security updates compared to phones or laptops, and a compromised smart TV on the same network as your other devices is a foothold an attacker could potentially use to reach other things, not just an isolated privacy concern about viewing habits. To be fair: not every smart TV manufacturer handles this the same way, and default settings have generally gotten somewhat more transparent since the regulatory attention a few years back. The defaults are still built to collect data by default and require you to opt out, not the other way around, which is the core issue worth being deliberate about.
A practical setup checklist
- 1Go through setup manually rather than accepting the quick-start defaults, and look specifically for ACR, sometimes labeled "Viewing Information," "Live Plus," or similar, and disable it
- 2Disable the microphone or voice assistant feature if you do not use it, either in settings or via a physical mute switch if the remote has one
- 3Put smart TVs and other IoT devices on a separate guest or IoT network, isolated from computers and phones that handle sensitive accounts
- 4Check for and install firmware updates periodically, the same way you would for a router
- 5Consider using an external streaming device with more transparent privacy controls instead of the TV's built-in smart platform, and treating the TV itself purely as a display
None of this means smart TVs are uniquely malicious, most of what they collect is standard for a lot of connected consumer electronics at this point. It does mean the "smart" features are worth the same five minutes of deliberate setup you would give a new phone, rather than the automatic acceptance most people give a television.
